Talking About Activities: Enhancing Outcomes Reporting through Qualitative Approaches (repeats)
Speaker: James D. Morgante, PhD, Associate Director, Qualitative and Survey Research Methods, American Society of Clinical Oncology
The educational effectiveness of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities is routinely measured with tests and questionnaires. Tests allow for the measure of within-activity learning. When test items are comparable and the same learners complete both the pre- and post-test, learners’ developing expertise (i.e., post-test) can be compared to their pre-existing knowledge (i.e., pre-test). Questionnaires aim to understand learners self-perceived intent-to-change. Presented items ask learners to assess the likelihood of incorporating activity learnings into their practice and describe what they intend to do differently. Together, tests and questionnaires are informative measures of educational effectiveness, but these quantitative approaches may provide an incomplete analysis of an activity. Focus groups and interviews, qualitative approaches, can add an additional level of understanding of learners’ activity participation and engagement. No outcomes measure or approach is robust on its own. A mixed-methods outcomes design, in which quantitative and qualitative approaches are combined, is ideal for measuring and reporting educational effectiveness.
This session will provide an overview of the six major methods of outcomes data collection and value of mixed methods approaches for measuring and reporting the educational effectiveness of CPD activities. Focus groups, one of the major methods, can be especially useful for obtaining in-depth information on how learners have incorporated their understanding into practice after having completed an activity. The procedures and best practices for the design, development, moderation, and analysis of focus groups, a qualitative approach, will be discussed as a means for adding an additional level of understanding to tests and questionnaires, quantitative approaches. Regarding design, protocols for conducting both in-person and virtual focus groups, via video conferencing platforms, will be discussed. Upon conclusion of this session, participants will be able to describe the processes for developing a focus group protocol and identify opportunities for incorporating focus group insights into CPD activity outcomes reporting.
